Making HKD 800K/Month, Bank Wouldn't Lend HKD 3M: 5 Secrets Banks Never Tell SMEs

Last month, a logistics company owner broke down in front of me. 8 years in business. 30-truck fleet. HKD 2M monthly revenue. HKD 800K monthly profit.

He applied for a HKD 3M loan to expand his fleet. Three banks. All rejected. The relationship managers couldn’t even explain why.

Here are five financing-preparation issues that Hong Kong SMEs should examine using current official and provider sources:

Secret 1: Banks don’t care about profit. They care about cash flow. Your P&L says HKD 800K profit. The bank looks at your last 6 months of bank statements. If cash isn’t flowing consistently through the account, the profit figure means nothing.

Secret 2: Your industry may already be on the bank’s blacklist. Every bank has an internal industry risk rating table. Logistics, retail, construction, startups — some are flagged before you even apply. You don’t get rejected because you’re bad. You get rejected because your industry code triggered the system.

Secret 3: Under 3 years old? There’s an invisible line. Most banks won’t touch companies under 3 years for unsecured loans. The RM won’t tell you this — their system auto-flags you. The solution: government SFGS guarantee schemes.

Secret 4: The RM is not your friend. Their KPI #1 is bringing new deposits into the bank. Lending you money is #3 on their list. When you walk in asking for a loan, their first thought is “do you have money to deposit first?”

Secret 5: Your personal credit score can kill your company’s application. Banks check every director’s personal TU credit report. One forgotten credit card payment from 3 years ago? That could add 1.5% to your interest rate.

The result: We repackaged the logistics company’s application, bypassed branch RMs, pitched directly to senior decision-makers at 3 banks simultaneously. 7 days later: HKD 3M approved at P-1.5%.
