Last month, a renovation contractor sat down in front of me. “Eason, my company has an active lawsuit. Am I blacklisted forever?”
He had a worker injury case. He had proper insurance. But the moment banks saw “court record” on his TU Public Record — instant rejection.
Here’s what most business owners don’t know:
Banks don’t treat all court cases equally. Bankruptcy and criminal fraud are automatic rejections. But civil claims, workplace injuries, and contract disputes — with proper documentation — can get approved.
The biggest hack? If your case is settled, TU doesn’t auto-update. You have to proactively notify TransUnion with court closure documents, settlement agreements, or compensation receipts. Most lawyers won’t tell you this. Banks certainly won’t.
The 5 types of court records — and what to do:
| Type | Bank Reaction | Your Move |
|---|---|---|
| Civil (pending) | Almost always reject | Wait for judgment, prepare insurance proof |
| Civil (settled, paid) | Some banks will consider | Court judgment + receipts → notify TU → reapply |
| Workplace injury | Usually OK with insurance | Labour Dept docs + insurer proof |
| Bankruptcy | Banks won’t touch | Wait it out, or try PE funds |
| Criminal (fraud) | Permanent blacklist | Non-bank channels only |
Bank rejected you because of a court case? Our 5 exclusive PE funds don’t look at TU Public Records. They look at your business model and asset value.
